We the undersigned petition Reigate and Banstead Borough Council to Provide a free extra Green general waste bin to larger households. More details

Petition update from the council, 04 January 2016

Dear Petitioners,

Our kerbside recycling service was introduced in July 2012. Householders were provided, free of charge, with a grey 140l wheeled bin for recycling (glass, cans and plastic pots, tubs and trays), a 23l food caddy (for food waste) and a 55l box (for mixed paper, card and cardboard). If residents use these containers to recycle as much as possible the Council consider that there is no need to provide a bin larger than 140l for residual waste.

Yours sincerely,

Frank Etheridge
Streetscene Manager

More details from petition creator

It is a sad state of affairs when the local council will not provide additional bin collection services to those in need. Larger households, 4+ beds, with 4+ people occupying them, cannot reasonably be serviced with one fortnightly bin collection, using one green bin that holds 2 normal bin bags. Residents are therefore left to take their refuse to the local collection and processing center, involving car journeys (if they have a car that is). Larger households pay more in council tax, and more taxes in general with more people living in them, it is simply not proportionate to not reflect this with extra bin collection capacity. One can only question what larger households are paying for in higher council tax band costs, if not a increased council requirement and service? Councils then seek to profit by charging households ridiculous fees for additional bins, or bin bags - as as example, £2 per bin bag for the privilege of having an extra bag picked up. This, at a time when residents are already forced to recycle into 4 different bins to assist refuse collection and efficiency.
