Petition update from the council, 24 July 2012

Set out below is the response that was sent to the petition organiser Mr Maik from the Executive Member for Leisure on 23 July 2012:

Dear Mr Maik

Thank you for submitting the petition asking for improvements to be made to the playground at Redhill Memorial Park. The deadline for signatures has now passed and, as Executive Member for Leisure, I am now in a position to give you a written response.

We are aware that the playground in Memorial Park is a well used and appreciated play space, being the only play facility in the centre of Redhill. Indeed, when I used to live in Redhill I used the playground nearly every day with my two young sons so have first hand experience of what it is like.

I am therefore pleased to be able to confirm that we are already planning a refurbishment, not just of the playground, but of the whole of Memorial Park, as part of the plans for major improvements to Redhill town centre.

Officers have been working with designers to create a master plan for refurbishment of the park, and in the near future this plan will be presented to lead Councillors for their consideration. Once this plan, and the proposed funding method, is agreed we will then be in a position to finalise the designs and go out to tender for the works. If all goes to plan the refurbishment will begin next year.

The plan allows for moving the playground to the other side of the park, so that it is more accessible from the town, and it will be a well equipped playground as befits the main play space for the town centre. The specific design of the play area has not been considered yet, but we will be involving local residents and children in choosing the final design.

I hope this gives you sufficient information about our plans. When we get closer to actually carrying out the works we will ensure it is well publicised.

Yours sincerely,

Cllr De Save
Executive Member for Leisure
